The Estate Planning Process

The estate planning process involves meeting with your attorney to discuss your estate, your needs and the options available to you. Planning for the end of life is something few people want to think about, and many put it off until it is too late. Do not wait. The process need not be complicated and is often less expensive than you may think.

Your estate may only require a simple will. You may wish to use a will to leave more than assets. It is also an opportunity to leave a legacy. This can involve personal communication about your hopes for your loved ones, such as children or grandchildren. A will can be very straightforward – “who gets what” or can be personal and contain stories, memories or final thoughts. It’s up to you.

You may have an accumulated 401(k), or investments, a cabin or other property, or a valuable collection or small business. Your family may include a child with special needs or minor children. In these instances, you may want to explore the option of a trust.
